Walmart to Open 'Game Time Headquarters' in 1,700-plus Garden Centers

The customized areas will feature team merchandise and decor plus snacks and beverages

Aug 29, 2008

Walmart has developed a game plan to transform more than 1,700 of its Garden Centers into "Game Time Headquarters," the company said Thursday. The customized areas will target supporters of local college and professional football teams. Beginning this week and running through Sept. 30, the Bentonville, Ark. giant will feature everything for football season, from team merchandise and decor to snacks and beverages.

Since 42 percent of tailgaters spend more than $500 each season on food and supplies according to tailgating.com, Walmart says it can help tailgaters to prepare for six home games this season with enough food and gear for a "special team" of four for about $66 per game, a savings of more than $100 for the season.

The discounter suggests items for the tailgate setup such as hats with team logos, T-shirts, armchairs, and coolers, in addition to grills and charcoal. A list of "eats" includes franks, chicken breasts, buns, ketchup, chips, potato skins, fresh vegetable trays, and Pepsi. Online options include a widget to download schedules and send e-mail, plus a shopping list to calculate costs for a tailgate party.
