Atlantic Canadian Co-ops Plan Local Food Promotion
Sept 2, 2008
The larger aim of the initiative is to make people aware of the
advantages of local foods whenever available, say organizers.
"Atlantic Canadians increasingly understand that there are huge
benefits to eating food that's been produced in our region," noted
Bertha Campbell, a Kensington, P.E.I.-based member of Co-op
Atlantic's board of directors, in the Miramichi, N.B. Leader. "We
want to make it as easy as possible to make the Atlantic choice."
Co-op Atlantic is a wholesale and services business owned by the
region's over 75 co-op stores.
Some major positives: Eating food produced close to home supports
area businesses that contribute to the local communities and
economy, and reduces the distance items need to travel before
reaching the plate.
During the first week of September, Atlantic Canadian co-op stores
will actively promote products from the region, via special
"Atlantic Produced" shelf tags. Various in-store educational events
will take place on Thursday.
