Clinic in Houston Wal-Mart Supercenter Reopens with 'Telemedicine'

Aug 21, 2008

The first retail health clinic utilizing telemedicine-based healthcare delivery has opened in a Pearland, Texas Wal-Mart Supercenter. The clinic, operated jointly by My Healthy Access, Inc. and NuPhysicia, LLC, will offer care via physicians using remote telemedicine systems and onsite paramedics.

The Pearland site is one of six retail clinics inside Wal-Mart Supercenters around the Houston area that had been closed because "the business model wasn't working for these clinics," according to a report on the My Healthy Access Web site. My Healthy Access is a provider of retail healthcare services to the urban marketplace. The company operates telemedicine clinics in conjunction with NuPhysicia LLC, which operates exclusively by telemedicine methods developed by the University of Texas Medical Branch.

The non-emergency clinics previously employed nurse practitioners. The clinics are now reopening using a telemedicine format through a new partnership between My Healthy Access and NuPhysicia.

The remaining five clinics are slated to open by the end of August, according to My Healthy Access.
