Wal-Mart No. 1 in STORES Top 100 Retailers List

July 2, 2008

Though the retail climate has changed dramatically in the last year, the top power players at retail have not, according to STORES magazine's Top 100 Retailers List. Namely, Wal-Mart is still ranks No. 1 among all retail channels--food and nonfood.

The report was published in the July issue of STORES, which is the magazine of the National Retail Federation. The list is an annual snapshot of the retail industry that ranks companies by revenue regardless of channel. As the definition of retail continues to expand, the researchers added technology and entertainment retailers to this year's list.

Wal-Mart has topped the list since 1991 when STORES started the report. According to the report, Home Depot is the nation's second-largest retailer.

Cincinnati-based grocer Kroger came in at No. 4. Other grocers and formats that sell food that made the list include Costco (No. 5) and Target (No. 6). Rounding out the top 10 is Supervalu (No. 10), pushing Safeway down to No. 11.
