To attract cash-strapped diners, restaurateurs are making dramatic bids to ramp up their bar business. Around the country, proprietors are turning their restaurants -- or significant parts of them -- into glorified bars. Top chefs are serving up bar snacks like grilled cheese sandwiches and hot dogs. The reason: While consumer spending at restaurants is falling precipitously, drink orders, particularly for cheaper drinks like beer, are barely dropping off. For restaurants, it's now proving more cost-effective to serve lower-priced dishes that diners can munch on as they buy drinks.
Bacardi Serves Shot of 'Superfruit'

From Jell-O to the juice aisle, "superfruits" have been all the rage for the past couple years. Now, liquor brands are increasingly getting into the act with the launch of Bacardi's Dragon Berry flavored rum this month. Superfruits, like acai and pomegranate, are known for their high antioxidant levels and nutrients. Bacardi is the first to add dragon fruit to a spirit. Alcohol industry consultant Arthur Shapiro said the Bacardi line extension is "smart and adventurous. A lot of people are gravitating towards superfruits because they provide a unique taste.
